The old man and the mini widget

Not quite over the hill, Thanks to Florida where there are none !
Often I wished I could pull a GURU out of a bottle ! I have been struggling through Cyber Space, learning as I go.
The problem I have is I am a slow learner, and everytime I think I have something figured out somebody pulls the plug,,, you know who....Gates and company !
Microsoft is going to do something pertaining to movie with Sky Drives. I may integrate that to my portfolio as well, with
http://skydrives.tv
I set up my own websites http://movienetworks.org is one of them , focusees on downloads,
My skills are very limited , but I am not charging anyone for admission , so that makes it a tolerable bargain. If one goes to the TV page they can have all the Star Treck movies they want by clicking on the bottom link. - FREE OF CHARGE !
I just discovered mini widgets and I am fascinated , I got most of the top level domains so I can play with them in Cyber Space,
I will even invite you to play along ,click on my bunny widget at http://miniwidgets.tv
What is not a game is http://www.veohreviews.com
I am not a techie... but a FREELANCER ? Maybe,.. I sort of like that...
I may perhaps go down in history as the mini widget guy that redefined pluggins and gave the big widgets a sense of conscience.
Hi FREELANCERS ! Don't tell anyone I am really not a bunny...

can you be on call for this server and make some easy cash?

heya,

i'm the server admin for this site that's running really smooth. part of my contract is that i'm on call in case anything goes wrong. it's a smooth running super over-powered box, fresh install (fedora core 4 with cpanel), and the chances of something going wrong are extremely unlikely.

if a service fails, and that hasn't happened yet, cpanel will restart the service. but anyhow, as part of the contract, i need someone to be on call at all times, and i'm going away this June 21 - 25th. The server is both internally and externally monitored, and if a service goes down, it SMS's my cellphone with the message right away. If I can forward that to you, that's all that would be required.

The requirement is that you have a cell on you at all times for the time that I'm gone. You must also be able to respond to emergency calls from the client (again, not likely).

I figure like $50 to cover those days is good. Basically you just make $50 for giving me your cellphone number and agreeing to cover it. If something does happen to go wrong, you'll have SSH to the server and you can go fix er up at your hourly wage (let me know what it is).

I've really put this off to way too late... so I'm hoping it works out. Otherwise, if anyone can recommend some such service, I'd be thankful. I don't want to pay for a generic reboot service cuz that wouldn't make me feel comfortable enough to go out partying for 5 days.

Thanks bloods,

Shiraz

My father and I last year created a nonprofit, in a attempt to find investors we decided to raise the money alone.
We then created a small hosting company with a fantastic affiliate program, designed to give members a tool for making money.
Profits from our site will go to our Foundation. The site is home grown and brand new.

My sites are very simple. But not everyone needs flash and frames.

The good news about my sites:
a. They are cheap. They don't take a lot to build, so I don't have to charge a lot for them.
b. They load quickly. Even if someone has an older browser or a slow connection.
c. They are very clean, simple and elegant.

Does anybody have any experience with working with images of celebrities/politicians for a self-published book. I'm fine with seeking out/using amateur phtographs, but want to know what the standards are for payment, copyright usage, etc.

Any help would be much appreciated.

From the press release:

"Shaytan Rising is a collection of five short stories which examine the dark sides of the self. Kyle Sennett wrote Shaytan Rising , compiling five of his best short works. The title story SHAYTAN RISING tells the tale of a man who finds himself inexorably drawn to a dark force that he cannot identify until he becomes that dark force himself. SHE is the tale of the Old Gift and the terrifying creature who is its keeper. CONFESSIONS OF A DJINI takes a more humorous tone, exposing the secrets of the wish-granting spirits eternally tied to their lamps. In BACKLASH we meet Jessica, who has returned to her family home and her family's secrets. And finally in THE CIRCLE we meet a coterie of magicians who are plagued by an urge demon, Abraxas, and the machinations of their own superiors within their secret Order."

volunteer for homeless folks could really use a laptop (is this a good tribe for this posting?)

you can derive benefit from about any situation. i acquired two significant benefits from being homeless.

first learning how to live without money was a blessing.

secondly i learned how deeply rewarding it is to help other people. it's not a chore anymore. it's what i choose to do with my daytime hours.

helping people is wonderful. i could help a lot more if i had a laptop with a wireless card. if you have one, i'd love to hear from you.
thanks!

In building a new forum I've found scores of writers who give away articles with two requirements:

1) the articles run intact

2) the article includes information about the author and a backlink to the author's website

Authors can submit work at places like http://www.ArticleCity.com and http://www.netterweb.com (more listed at "free resources" at my forum http://www.WebLoggers.org).

Building backlinks to your site increases your traffic and your search engine rankings.

Authors can also list themselves in the marketplace at our new forum, http://www.WebLoggers.Org - as well as learn everything there is to know about web logging, aka blogging.

Regards,
Keith

Transitioning from FT to Freelance?

I'm working as a contractor right now- basically full-time hours- at a company. I'm working towards becoming a consultant, and have a meeting this afternoon with a potential client for a 6 week project (that's what was advertised).

My question is, now that I may be transitioning to a consultant role, how can I explain this to my boss that will not piss her off?
I don't want to quit or leave my current job, but would like to offer them my time a few days a week (and have them for when I don't have other projects going on) while I work with this new client.

How have you transitioned? Must it be a clean break?

The Hurricane Poster Project

www.thehurricaneposterproject.com

Moxie Sozo, a nationally known design firm in Boulder, Colorado is teaming
up with other designers and design firms around the country to create THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT. Posters are being donated every day and submissions will be accepted until the end of the year.

All poster designers please step up!

THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT seeks limited edition sets of hurricane-related posters from high-profile and up-and-coming artists, designers, and design firms from around the United States and abroad. The donated posters will be sold online, and all proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross.

As designers, we have the collective ability to do what we love, AND to
create a difference. THE HURRICANE POSTER PROJECT has been conceived as a collective effort by the design community to unite and effect change through our work. In order for this project to be successful, we are counting on designer participation. Our goal is to raise at least $1,000,000 for the Red Cross through this project. Please spread the word. Please participate. We continue to receive new posters almost every day, and will continue to accept submissions until December 31, 2005.

If you have questions or need more information, please contact Leif Steiner
at: info@thehurricaneposterproject.com or 720.304.7210.

Anyone got any tips on where I might find decent health insurance? I'm a sysadmin and self-emplyed. I'm cobra-ing off my last full-time job right now and I'm looking to switch to something a little cheaper (and ideally not just catastrophic). I'd like to be able to join some sort of group and get on a group plan because I'm not satisfied with the individual plans available so far. Anyone got any leads?

This is an opportunity to make some extra money in your spare time, or to make a full-time income! Not only that but you can make your own schedule.

The Spectator is America's longest running adult newspaper, currently in our 26th year. We are in the process of significantly increasing the quality and coverage of the publication, and in parallel with this we are seeking to increase our distribution in the Bay Area. The territory we are looking to cover stretches from Novato and Vacaville in the north, to Antioch and Livermore in the east, to San Jose and Santa Cruz in the south, and all areas inbetween.

We are looking for at least 20 people living anywhere within our region to sell our publication into adult stores, liquor stores, and adult-focused retail outlets, for ongoing sale to the public. The positions will be as self-employed agents of our publication, covering a defined territory. Pay-wise, you'll get half of what the store owners pay for the paper so the more you sell, the more you make. Agents can work as many or as few hours as they need, and earnings may readily exceed $1,000 per week for the most organized and dedicated candidates. Opportunities to become team leaders will be available in the future.

For more details contact Terry Hall, Editor-in-Chief at:
Spectator,
5741 Doyle Street,

Hi all,

I have started a consulting firm that focuses on business intelligence/ competitive intelligence for companies.I am young, and having worked in marketing and business development throughout my career I know that I have the skills to provide good results to potential clientele.

Now, I have just finished a pro bono contract for a manufacturer in order to start my consulting firm - they liked my work a lot. I am looking to build a portfolio of 3 more pro bono contracts with non-profits to build my credibility before I actively start pursuing paying clients.

My question is, would you reccommend this type of strategy or should I immediately go after smaller paying clients instead?

thanks,

Alok

Looking for a programmer with Anarchist/leftist ideals

The reason I ask, is because I need someone's help with a project, and they'd be much more likely to help if they agreed with what I was trying to do with it.

I'm a member of the Freespace coaliton. We are a Toronto based coalition of autonamour project group that have a collectivised, money free economy.

Or at least we're trying to be. For now there are only a few groups, and not much money, nor many resources... but we're growing.

What I mean by project group, is a collective working on building, or doing one specific thing. For example, the most prominent project group in the coalition at the time is the Freespace Soundsystem. We put on underground raves, usually for free, in the abandoned spaces of the city. Others groups are the Scavangers/builders collective (wich consists of some of the same members as the soundsystem) wich builds neat stuff out of junk, like the giant Yurt that we sometimes set up for our raves, and the Community Zine (pretty self explanatory)...

There are other groups, but I think you get the picture.

you can check out more at www.freespace.cc

Now, What we need, is a program that will help all of the different groups stay connected online, but beyond that, implement the non-heiarchical structure that we're trying to implement. It's less important now, but as we grow, especially as we grow to include more and more members that are not immediately in touch in person, we'll need this program to keep the whole organisation running, especially as, since it's not meant to have a head of any real kind, (although there are some randomly selected adminitrators for some things) the only structure the system will have at all, will be that wich is hardwired into a software program.

So, I'm looking for someone to help me either use an existing program (if there is one that can do the job) or perhaps build one for us to use. I really can't do this myself, because I don't have the time, nor do I have the knowhow. Neither does anyone else in the group at the moment. But there must be people out there who can do it, and agree enough with what we're doing to try.

So... here's a list of what it is that I need the program to do... in short form. If anyone's interested in taking this project on, I'll fll you in on more from there.

A) (Membership)

allows groups to sign up for the coalition.
-prompts for - name of group, 3 peoples' names, e-mail adresses, inventory of tools used, lcoation of members

maintains list of all members

B) (Funding council)

allows groups to fill out pre-formatted funding request form. (asking the coalition for funding)

picks funding council (wich gives out money to groups), monthly, randomly from list of all members of all groups in coalition
-allows council to reveiew funding requests
-allows council to allot funds to requests from tresury
-allows council to review previous finances of Coalition

C) (Tribunal)

allows all members to call for tribunal investigation
-prompts for type of investigation (1 expell individual,2 expell group,3 allow group extra individuals,4 assign group as central communal industry,5 other investigation)
-Prompts for investigation location (to pick members close to investigation)
-picks tribunal randomly from list of members, notifies by e-mail
prompts tribunal for results, autmatically carries out results for options 1,2,3,4
-notifies all community of tribunal results

D) Finances

Allows central Trade Organisation to pick or change Project group representatives, and central representatives
allows representatives to add budget changes to their field. imputting ammounts into the seperate budgets of the project groups, or of coalition wide product lists.

Example:

June 5th - expenses - Gasoline
Freespace soundsystem - 20 litres - $18.00
Heating Collective - 10 litres - $9.00
Lawn Maintenace commitiee - 10 litres - 9.00

Gasoline total - june 5th - 40 lites - $36.00

-OR-

June 5th - expenss - Freespace Soundsystem
Gasoline - 20 lites - $18.00
Maintenece - Gennie - $102.00
Wire, audio - 65.00
Wire, electrical - 18.00

Soundsystem total - $201.00

expenses and revenue to be entered dayly as they happen

program maintains database of expenses and revenue based both on products and project groups.

Allows interested parties to see both what project groups are spending what kind of money and on what, and what products are being purchased by why and for how much.

Also allows to see what products are being sold by who and for how much as well as what project groups are making what money, and on what products.

fincanes to be displayed in monthly ledgers, and yearly ledgers. Commuinity members to have acess to both, univited guests to have acess only to yearly budhgets.

E) Resource Sharing

Each project group to select member who is to maintain online an inventory of all products produced, available for sale, or for free internal distribution.

Each project group free to create or join 1 guild. Guild votes for 1 person to maintain list of guild capital resources for all groups in guild (ie, speakers, generator, or ie portable saw mill, hand tools, power tools, etc)

person to be notified by e-mail of any changes to sytatus, guild free to elect new rep whenever votes change.

Both product and capital resouce lists to be accesable to everyone in coalition or outside of it.

(F) Communication

-people responsible for certain tasks are e-mailed prompts to go online and do task.

- monthly e-mail is sent out listing funding council, results of tribunals, and public announcements afterwords all at once, that anyonce can enter over the course of the month.

- individuals can send messages to groups, like project groups, guilds, funding councils, tribunals, etc... Program selns e-mails to everyone autmatically, person only selects group to send to.

-person can create poll (vote on issue), members prompted to vote or add and option. When time expires or everyone votes (prompted as they log on) everyone is e-mailed the results immediately.

(G) Interface

Functioning a lot like... perhaps an old BBS... A person logs on with a password, is given access to whatever functions they are responsible to do / have access too (funding council options, tribunal results, project group production imput, finances, etc)

does buisness, is prompted with new duties/queries for imput when neccicary, and loggsoff.

Prompted by e-mail to attend to duties as they come up, prompted again of duties as logging in.

Messages are sent by e-mail, but prompted to check e-mail when logging on, every time new messages sent.

So... yeah... There might actually be a program that could do this... Wich would be nice... but there may not be...

Can someone please help with this. This computer program is kina the make-or-break of this project here... without it, there is no coalition.

I’m new to this group. I am a freelance web designer and I just wanted to let everyone know about this really cool website I stumbled across. It’s a social networking service -- www.Simpatico.com They seem pretty new but I think it will really take off... It’s a community for singles and others where you can go in and meet all kinds of people...It has been extremely helpful to me in my business… I have made lots of contacts and done a lot of networking...You can start a club and manage it as a private, moderated or public one. You can invite all your friends and they can accept or decline...you can see the photos and profiles of who joined. You can even plan events...its like Evite but much better...you can see the attendees' profiles… There is also a huge classified ad section with free photo classifieds..! This is the only website I have seen where you can see full profiles of friends of friends and see what clubs, events and things they are selling… Well I think this is a very cool website you all should definitely check it out…

I'm very new to this all. Can someone point me in the right direction? Books, resources, facts, tips, ideas I should know? I've seen some posts on freelance programming, but what about for writers specifically or freelancers more generally?

Thanks!

Design a tribe.net user profile template.

(A little off-topic, but I thought the freelancers here might appreciate an opportunity to promote themselves.)

Tribe.net is looking for great template designs -- we're debuting a new feature soon, which will let users customize their profiles with customized stylesheets. This is in addition to the new content customization features that you may have seen on some users' profiles -- with this new style feature, you'll be able to select from a library of styles, created both by us at tribe, and by fellow users.

The "fellow users" part is where you come in -- we'd like to include user-created styles in the library, and so we're running a little contest. From now until April 1st, submit your style as a JPEG comp to profiledesign@tribe.net. We'll pick the best ones and feature them in the style library.

If selected, your style will be credited with your name, which will be linked to your tribe.net user profile (which you can then use to further promote your talents). This will be a great way to get your skills some exposure, as every tribe.net user will see the style library page.

If you're interested, check out the Profile Design Contest tribe:

http://profiledesign.tribe.net/

I, Pete and Victor will be in there, answering questions about designing for tribe.net's CSS. I'll also be posting some of my style concepts there, so you can get an idea of what's required.

If you want a summary of the contest rules, I've also posted a listing here and in other tribes:

Hello Everyone,

I've been thinking about getting into doing freelance work on the side, but don't really know where to start. I was wonder if any of you would be willing to give me a push in the right direction. Any tips on things to watch out for? Thanks for the help!

Proud father

Part of last year I helped Catholic Healthcare West, a hospital chain of 43 hospitals in California, Arizona and Nevada, put together a visual strategy for all of their hospital websites. After receiving the IA Map and page specs, I authored an extensive styleguide that included guidelines on look and feel as well as tone and theme. Then began the process of mocking it all out - every page, every visual instance.

50 Styleguide pages and 300 Macromedia Fireworks mockups later, I handed the visual work over to development, and helped facilitate the development implementation process into code and into an intuititive content management system [using stellent] to keep the site alive via the postings of marketing managers. The first of 43 sites is now launching. The development team seamlessly integrated up to 90 percent of the styleguide [thanks to good tandem work in keeping the development team apprised of all comps and instances for feedback]. I am a proud father. See Below:
